I would argue that IT is not inherently more productive. Indeed, one might argue that the likes of Facebook, along with increasingly poor software user interface design, makes us all less and less productive.
Skype, in its Microsoft incarnation, is a good example of really poor design trumping over what used to be a pretty useful software app. Let's go back to creating software and systems that solve real-world problems rather than simply focus on creating a captive customer base ie, users have little choice and increasing economic "rents" for their owners. In recent years I find, an understanding of effective human computer interface design principles has been cast aside by many corporate app developers. The apps seem to reflect more marketing departments' ill conceived notions than good practical design. Shame really. Skype Microsoft is among the worst offenders to date. In fact, in a period long since passed - before Microsoft acquired the product - the Skype user interface was pretty good and certainly very useable.
Whatever happened?? OhEssex Aug 14 OMG - what an utterly disgusting and counter-intuitive UI this software has. We just finished a Skype conference and all we were trying to do was clear the screen of cruft to maximize the screen sharing space but everything was so counter-intuitive we just couldn't figure anything out. You'd click on one icon and an unexpected popup window would appear and none of us could figure out how to close it.
Same thing with the huge toolbar across the top. All of us in the room all engineers were cursing at how awful Skype was. Before even trying to fix it, they should literally fire everybody at Microsoft who worked on it because they have proven beyond all doubt they are incapable of making a GUI usable by normal humans. Click on the "Help" button. If you don't see the "Help" option, hold the "ALT '' key on your keyboard and a menu will appear. If you're running Windows 10, you'll have to update your Skype version through the Microsoft Store.
Click the blue button in the middle of the box on the left hand side of the screen. Select "Get Skype for Windows," or one of the other options, depending on which operating system you're using.
The file should begin downloading, double click on it once it's fully downloaded. Follow the prompts, and choose to replace the old Skype application on your computer with the newer version, if prompted. The file will begin to download at the bottom of your screen. Once finished downloading double click it. In the pop-up window, drag the Skype icon on the left side over to the Applications folder on the right side using your mouse.
A pop-up window will appear asking you if you'd like to replace the version of Skype currently on your computer with the new one. Click "Replace.
