You'll click through the dialogue instead of the pages while the sprites and backgrounds change depending on what's happening.
Many times you'll get special screens of actions with dialogue and sometimes they are even animated. You can select different dialogue options to choose how the main character you're controlling will respond to what's happening. That's pretty much all there is to explain about visual novels.
What0s great about this genre is that it allows these micro-stories to be released as games, a few situations and art is all you need to get a nice visual novel. Some of the most popular visual novels out there are the Danganronpa series.
They are a little different to point-and-click games, but they do share a lot of mechanics. Sleepover is one of those odd cases where you can finish the game in about the same time you watch a couple of anime episodes. There's really only one situation, and it's up to you how to face it. Will you be able to get the perfect happy ending, or will you turn Kano's dream night into a nightmare? Graphics and visuals: The visuals in this title are actually great, even though they lack animation the art is nice and clean.
Good character design and a little lazy but effective setting. The overall UI of the game is good-looking too. Gameplay: The game can be a bit frustrating because it seems to have more bad endings than anything. Miss one answer or action and Kano's night can be doomed in no time.
The good thing is that you can start over and make the right choices, it won't take you too long to get it right. Sound: The audio in this game is a pleasant surprise, as it even has its own themes with vocals and nice composition. Normally when you have a crush, you tell your best friend. But what happens when your best friend is your crush? The developers at BlackMonkey Pro try their best to tell this tale in Sleepover. The story of Sleepover is told from the perspective of Haruyuki Kano.
It certainly paints a picture of him as the instigator in this story, but more on that later. Kano is on his way to meet with his best friend, Sato Hideaki Aki , at the arcade, where they plan to play games and hang out. Opposite of Kano, Aki comes off as rigid and stoneface, but seems much more responsible.
Kano loves these traits about Aki. Like I said before, I like mindless sex in BL as much as the next fangirl, but at least ease me into it! This time around our uke, I mean protagonist is the sweet and impressionable, Toshu Kanada. I guess I was expecting more substance from the character, especially given the over the top protagonist from Sleepover. But instead the Black Monkey team decided to play it safe with a rather bland leading man… Thankfully, the two potential romantic interests had a bit more going for them than our jail-bait cutie, Toshu, but not by much.
Each of the main love interests have their own conflict that makes up the entirety of their individual routes. Our red haired uke was drooling over big bro Masaru from the moment he laid eyes on him. Overall, Masaru had the better route, his conflict was well written and it did a fair job of showcasing Masaru as a character. His conflict was believable and just compelling enough to keep the player reading until the end.
However, I have just one complaint… the relationship between Masaru and Toshu seems forced and wholly unnecessary! The second love interest, Ichiru Yanai, is about as different from Masaru as a character can get. Itaru is blonde, outgoing, rich, and not nearly as sexually repressed as our dear sweet Big Bro, Masaru; which is probably why I enjoyed his route the least.
This is one of those routes that would have been much more interesting if Ichiru and Toshu had remained just friends, their romantic chemistry is non-existent.
Hell, I feel like this route is just in the game to bring in the shotacon fans! There are even more grammatical errors and awkward sentences and even more mindless sexual encounters! In addition to visual novel aspects of the game, BMP decided to make Bacchikoi a bit more hands on than their first title by adding baseball training mini games. So why am I even bothering to talk about them? Well, because I actually enjoyed them.
But, alas, this was just another missed opportunity for BMP to add a bit more substance to the overall narrative…. Finally, Bacchikoi is visually stunning, each character design, background, and CG is beautifully rendered full of lush vibrant colors and rich details. However, instead of learning from their mistakes in the first game, BMP wound up repeating them… unfortunately I also have the expansion pack, so this hell is not quite over for me yet, expect a review for that soon.
